No technology, no applications, but word of this low-tech "augmented reality" game spread quickly, and soon millions of people were captivated by this unexpected tram adventure.
Two stickers, that's it. One sticker is added to the window of the tram. Another sticker, with instructions, is placed in front of your seat. As the tram starts heading forward, you can play the game by moving your head up and down. Eat as many pedestrians as possible by capturing their heads into the creature’s mouth.
As I daydreamed about exploring new destinations, I realized that we often travel long distances for unique experiences, while forgetting to look around during our daily commutes. This led me to a personal challenge: can I turn my daily tram rides into an adventure. One day it struck: a minimalistic idea, adding almost nothing, but entirely changing the tram experience. After creating a successful prototype, I convinced its potential to the GVB (the transport operator for Amsterdam). And so began my journey to change the daily commute for countless passengers, as stickers were installed in all of the city's trams.
When the game was released on Amsterdam's trams, the tiny monster didn't stick to municipal borders. With over 60 million views, GVBeestje has embarked on a global media journey, captivating audiences worldwide. The game has attracted news coverage from Taiwan to Mexico, demonstrating its universal charm and the power of a simple idea to break through barriers.
“Het oogspelletje is een ode aan de creativiteit. Het GVBeestje is al zo populair dat ze van de ramen gestolen worden.
“Amsterdam commuters are playing their own augmented reality game that doesn’t require a phone.

The huge popularity of GVBeestje turned this lovable little creature into a beloved mascot. During the annual Gay Pride event, special "GayVBeestjes" joined the fun, adding a splash of color to the celebrations. Children fell in love with the charming creature, snuggling up to stuffed versions of GVBeestje at bedtime. The trams soon became a moving tribute to the whimsical mascot, covered in playful stickers showcasing our quirky animal friend. GVBeestje's rise to fame transformed it from a game character into a symbol of joy.
As millions enjoy the game, it serves as a reminder that embracing new perspectives can turn the ordinary into something extraordinary.
